The Shipwreck Centre

The Shipwreck Centre and Maritime Museum, Arreton, Isle of Wight.
Some photos of my recent visit, it is a small museum but jam packed with artifacts and info, plus a great DVD to watch as an introduction to all that you will see there narrated by a diver himself. You can also walk through the grounds and feed the ducks on the way to the village of Arreton.
The Shipwreck Centre

These two pictures, above and below are early forms of diving. It's hard to imagine the first, where the diver would literally crawl along the ocean floor in this contraption with his arms tightly wrapped in leather, often they would become numb and he would also be subjected to the bends when he surfaced. The diving bell below was a little less treacherous, but still would most likely have subjected the divers inside to the bends.

  1. I wish we had a place like this near where I live. Looks like fun.

    1. It's a lot of fun and a chance to learn quite a bit in a fun way too. The church of St. George is around the corner, a lovely old church with old fashioned bell ringers. You can find the link to the pics at the top of the page.
